History
Agency started in 1880 as the Ash & Cutting Insurance & Real Estate Agency, Pierre, SD.
In 1919, Guy Ericson started his own insurance agency. Prior to that, he had worked as a secretary for the State of South Dakota. He represented the Northwestern Life Insurance Co., several property insurance companies and the Federal Land Bank, processing farm loans. In 1925, Ericson purchased the Cutting Agency, which was one of the oldest businesses in Pierre, a straight-line successor from 1880.
In 1930, the agency started representing the Production Credit Assn. and had one Secretary.
In 1923, Mr. Ericson hired L. B. Thorpe. No wages were discussed, and he was to be paid whatever Mr. Ericson thought he was worth. At that time, they represented 10 Property and Casualty Companies and were located in the Bijou Theater Building.
In 1938, they were notified that the Federal Land Bank and the Production Credit Assn. had to be separated. The agency decided to stay with the Federal Land Bank, giving up the PCA.
In 1942, Mr. Thorpe entered the Marines and left the agency. In 1945, Mr. Thorpe returned and was going to go to work for an agency in Aberdeen. Mr. Ericson convinced Thorpe to stay in Pierre by agreeing to sell him 50% of the agency.
In 1946, the agency incorporated as the Ericson & Thorpe Agency, with a premium volume of approximately $40,000 and commission of approximately $7500 per year.
In 1948, they moved to the old Commerce Bank Building on Pierre St. The bank had gone broke during the depression. Also in 1948, they gave up the representation of the Federal Land Bank, and became a full time insurance and real estate agency, representing the John Hancock Life Insurance Co. making farm loans.
In 1963, Mr. Ericson retired and received a small salary and an office. The agency continued to grow during this time.
In 1970, Karl Fischer was asked by Mr. Thorpe to merge his insurance agency with the Ericson & Thorpe agency, taking stock in Ericson & Thorpe and a verbal promise from Mr. Thorpe that when he retired, Mr. Fischer could buy controlling interest in the agency.
April 11, 1974, they purchased the new, and present, office at 125 E. Dakota.
In 1971, Vern Schuetzle and John Linn joined the agency as agents.
In 1972, Mr. Ericson moved to California, passing away in 1981.
In 1979, we purchased the Winkler Agency.
In 1981, Vern and John left to start their own agency.
Also in 1981, Thorpe and Pease sold their stock to the corporation and Mr. Fischer,
making him the majority stockholder.
In April, 1982, Ericson & Thorpe purchased the Pierre Insurance Agency and Mike
Rounds came to work for us and became a stockholder.
In April, 1986, Ericson & Thorpe purchased the Wright Way Agency of Pierre, SD.
In July, 1986, Lowell Somsen came to work for Ericson & Thorpe.
In September, 1986, we changed the name from Ericson & Thorpe Insurance Agency, Inc. to Fischer, Rounds & Associates, Inc.
